- Change the oil (!)
- Change the camshaft pinion (prefer a 'dural' pinion - made of alloy
- instead of the 'celoron' pinion). beware of the adjustment (see hints
on how to adjust the camshaft). It is strongly recommended not to start
an old engine equipped with an old 'celoron' pinion because it has a tendancy
to dry with years and could break at any time : nice surprise !
- Make a few engine turns by hand.
- Check for leaks in the intake system. (pistons may melt if any air
leaks).
- Thoroughly tune the ignition timing.
- Check for good oil pressure : engine idling, loose one of the oil
supplier connected to the rocker cover (beware of hot oil !)
- Later on, do not forget that in old engine, the lubrication system
(the slinger around the crankshaft that collect the oil) tends to become
the 'garbage can' of old oil, clogging the oil conduit to the push rods
heads; so it's a good idea to open the engine in order to clean this slinger
(repeat this operation every 30000-40000 miles).
